Petaluma wouldn't be Petaluma without its breweries.In the 1870s, hops were one of Sonoma County's top cash crops. In 1895, Griess opened a brewery on the corner of Bodega and Upham, United States Brewery.By 1907 it was producing 40 barrels of beer a day! Griess died in 1914. January 16, 1919, The US Congress passed the 18th Amendment, a Wartime Prohibition Act for the manufacture, transportation, or sale of alcoholic beverages. So it was amid Prohibition that in 1923, Will Sylva bought the Victorian Griess residence on Upham, and the shuttered US Brewery. Silva tore down the brewery. He built a charming neighborhood of stucco bungalows in its place. One of Silva's bungalows, 508 Upham, has been restored & is available.
